INTRODUCTION

Jim Leftwich, 1956- , an innovative and dynamic poet from Charlottesville, Virginia, founded and edited the influential avant-garde literary journals Juxta and Juxta Electronic, with co-editor Ken Harris, in 1994. During the 1990's he was intensely active as a correspondent, theorist, and critical writer in the area of avant-garde poetry and writing, and was an influential figure in the development of ideas and consciousness for the new literary culture he was involved with. He was also influential in the promotion and distribution of the work of many of his fellow poets and writers. He himself has produced a significant body of literary work, work which is textual, conceptual and/or visual. Among his books and chapbooks are Dirt (1995), Khawatir (1995), Gnommonclature (1996, a collaboration with Jeffrey Little), Plasm, Plasm, Plasm (1997), Sepher Viscera (1997, a collaboration with Jake Berry), The Passion of Indifference (1997), Improvisations, Transformations (1998), Sample Example (1998), and Doubt (2000). His autobiography was published in 1996 in vol. 25 of Contemporary Authors Autobiography Series.

This collection of papers, correspondence, manuscripts, books, serials, visual poetry, and other material was donated to The Ohio State University Libraries in 1999 by Jim Leftwich. The collection has been divided into six sub-collections:

  • Jim Leftwich Monographs Collection, SPEC.CMS.86.1

  • Jim Leftwich Serials Collection, SPEC.CMS.86.2

  • Jim Leftwich Printed Matter Collection, SPEC.CMS.86.3

  • Jim Leftwich Visual Poetry Collection, SPEC.CMS.86.4

  • Jim Leftwich Correspondence Collection, SPEC.CMS.86.5

  • Juxta Press Collection, SPEC.CMS.86.6

Jim Leftwich Monographs Collection. This is a collection of almost 300 books and chapbooks, mostly of poetry, and mostly published during the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's. It includes work by Jake Berry, John Perlman, Miekel And, Peter Ganick, John M. Bennett, Ivan Argüelles, Thomas Lowe Taylor, Sheila E. Murphy, Jim Leftwich, Bob Heman, Bruce Andrews, and many others.

Jim Leftwich Serials Collection. This is a collection of over 300 serial publications, mostly focussed on poetry, and mostly published in the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's. Jim Leftwich Printed Matter Collection. This is a collection of miscellaneous pieces of printed matter, announcements, photocopied articles, and other material.

Jim Leftwich Visual Poetry Collection. This is an extensive collection of original and photocopied visual poetry, mostly by Jim Leftwich, mostly created between 1995 and 1999. It includes work using calligraphy, asemic calligraphy, stencilling, collage, computer-processed text, painting, rubbing, drawing, and other techniques. The work is on separate sheets, in notebooks, pamphlets, or pads, and some of it is on folded sheets designed as masters for small booklets. Some of the work was created in collaboration with such artists as Ken Harris, John M. Bennett, and Scott MacLeod.

Jim Leftwich Correspondence Collection. This is an extensive collection of correspondence, email, and or literary texts from Jim Leftwich, Andrew Joron, Ann Erickson, Fernando Aguiar, Jeffrey Little, Spencer Selby, Michael Basinski, Ficus strangulensis, Susan Smith Nash, John M. Murphy, Cheryl Burket, Amy Trussell , Celestine Frost, Don Hilla, Chris Daniels, Jack Foley, Ken Harris, Taz Delaney, Theo Lorenc, Gregory Vincent Saint Thomasino, John High, Tim Gaze, and many others. The correspondence took place between 1994 and 1999. The collection also includes much of Leftwich's theoretical and critical writing, and is a most valuable source of information and discussion about experimental and avant-garde poets and writers of the period.

Juxta Press Collection. This collection includes the files, dated 1993 to 1999, for the influential journal Juxta, edited by Jim Leftwich and Ken Harris. It includes submissions, layouts, correspondence, and other material. It also includes a complete printed-out run of the email magazine Electronic Juxta, and files and correspondence related to it. In addition, there are numerous files and manuscripts for the Juxta Press chapbook and broadsides publications. Like the Correspondence Collection, this collection is an essential source of information and ideas about the writers published in Juxta and their work.

It should be noted that not all material on a given topic will be found in the same folder or box. For example, material related to Juxta no. 2, or to Vincent Ferrini's Deus Ex Machina may be found in various places throughout the collections.

Many of Leftwich's books and chapbooks, as well as work by many of the writers represented in the papers, may be found in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Division's Avant Writing Collection.

Some corrections and clarifications to this guide, supplied by Leftwich in October 2000, may be found in Folder A, Box 1, of the Jim Leftwich Visual Poetry Collection.
