Are you Interested in improving your data visualization skills but unsure which tool to use? Tableau offers a no-code, drag and drop solution that allows you to explore, analyze, and effectively share your research data. The Research Commons now offers a hybrid four-week Carmen workshop series for Ohio State faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students that will help you learn to:
- Navigate the Tableau workspace and develop strategies for locating and critically evaluating freely available data;
- Connect, shape and prepare data for the Tableau workspace;
- Choose the most effective visual for what you are trying to show with the data you’ve collected;
- Describe and demonstrate key concepts, including aggregation and level-of-detail, addressing and partitioning, and when to use continuous versus discrete dates; and
- Apply visualization best practices to create impactful, engaging visualizations.
Data literacy concepts and competencies are interwoven throughout this course to help you master effective data visualization and storytelling.

But wait...this is not just a Tableau course!
Beyond reading, interpreting, and evaluating data, we will cover data handling, data synthesis, ethical use of data, and using data. At your own pace, you will complete one Carmen module each week that:
- Introduces one or two data literacy concepts or chart selection tools;
- Provides three or four short 5-7 minute videos showing how apply these concepts and practices in Tableau;
- Offers readings that explore best practices for visualizing data;
- Provides practice activities that will allow you apply what you’ve learned to your own research data, or a dataset that is meaningful to you; and
- Asks you to discuss and/or reflect on what you’ve learned and how you might apply what you’ve learned to a future project.
Last, since sharing frustrations and celebrating wins with others who are at a similar stage in learning a new tool can help speed your learning, weekly community time is scheduled every Tuesday via Zoom, from 12:00-1:00pm starting Tuesday, February 7, 2023 and ending Tuesday, February 28, 2023.
