Brett Shingledecker

Join the Ohio State University’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Library for a special session exploring its remarkable LGBTQ collection, donated to University Libraries by Brett Shingledecker in 2011. Shingledecker assembled the core of the collection during his time as co-owner of People Like Us, Chicago’s first ever LGBTQ bookstore. Including materials ranging from the mid-1970s to the present, such as zines, periodicals, books, posters, archival correspondence, and a variety of ephemeral items chronicling LGBTQ life and culture, the Shingledecker collection is an exceptional resource for teaching, research, and community information and service. In this session, Shingledecker will reflect on his life and work with People Like Us, his development of the collection, and his motivation for finding it a permanent home. Together with Eric J. Johnson, Curator of Thompson Special Collections at Ohio State, he will also discuss plans for the ongoing development of the collection and how it will support the University’s educational and outreach missions.
