The Research Commons and our partners will be hosting events throughout the week of February 12-16 as part of an international celebration of research data. The theme this year is “My Kind of Data.” Join us in-person or online for resources, workshops, and speakers that highlight the many ways you can customize your approach to finding and using data.

Monday February 12

  • OSU Software Carpentries: Version Control with Git
    8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Zoom
    Code is data!  Join us with our kickoff event: a hands-on workshop on using git and GitHub for solo or collaborative version control. No prior experience is required.

  • Data-Themed Cards Against Humanity
    3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Research Commons
    Take a break with colleagues over cards and refreshments, featuring a data-themed spin-off of the popular game Cards Against Humanity.

Tuesday February 13

  • Columbus Sanborn Georef-a-thon
    10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Research Commons
    Gain hands-on experience creating geospatial data from digitized historical maps! No experience required.

 

  • Compliance Academy: Data Classification (Click to join – no registration)
    12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Zoom
    Ohio State’s Data Governance team will cover basics about the data classification structure at the university and the resources available to help users determine data classification, as well as how data can be stored and shared based on classification level. We’ll also share plans underway to update and improve our resources. 

 

Wednesday February 14

  • Data and Analytics: Analyzing and Interpreting with a DEI Lens
    10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Zoom
    Learn how to apply a DEI lens in your research and analysis by identifying and locating appropriate variables and tools that mitigate bias and uncover inequities.
     
  • Resource Fair: Finding Secondary Data
    12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Research Commons
    Ever wondered where to find the perfect data set for your research or instruction? Join us for a resource fair of Ohio State archives, repositories, and centers that provide access to research data. Registration includes lunch.

Thursday February 15

  • Resource Fair: Data Consultation and Training
    12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Research Commons
    Need help working with your research data? Join us for a resource fair of Ohio State services available to assist researchers with data related research projects. Registration includes lunch.

Friday February 16

  • Data-Themed Cards Against Humanity
    10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Research Commons
    Take a break with colleagues over cards and refreshments, featuring a data-themed spin-off of the popular game Cards Against Humanity.
     
  • Big Ten Data Viz Championship
    2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Zoom
    Showcase your data visualization skills and compete for the title of Big Ten Academic Alliance Data Viz Champion! OSU submissions are due 1/19/24 with a public award ceremony on 2/16/24.
