Description
  • This is one of only 500 glass bottles that were made specifically for the First Byrd Antarctic Expedition. These bottles were used to measure ocean current strength and direction by writing where the bottle was released into the ocean, inserting that location within the bottle, and recording where the bottle was then found. The bottles were manufactured by the Owens-Illinois Glass Company from Toledo, Ohio. The bottle has an embossed design of one of the planes and the words: "Byrd Antarctic 1928 - 1929 Expedition".
