Summary
  • Jack Webb narrates the story of John Glenn's life, from his boyhood in New Concord, Ohio to his successful completion of the first supersonic transcontinental flight and his mission to orbit the earth three times in 1962. Includes brief comments from Glenn's parents, in-laws; teachers, coaches and pastor; they speak about his intelligence, and his spiritual and moral character. The film briefly covers Glenn's initial flight training; his further training in the U.S. Marines and his service during World War II with 59 missions and the Korean conflict with 90 missions, including 3 MiGs shot down. The film gives details of the Friendship 7 flight, and the honors and celebrations that ensued after John Glenn returned to earth. In his comments to Congress, John Glenn discusses the importance of the cooperation of many people who contribute to the success of the space program.
