As of 2017, the NCAA required a Faculty Athletic Representative from each of its members. As a member of NCAA, The Ohio State University Athletic Council and the University President oversaw selection of this Representative.

As of 2017, each member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association was required to appoint a Faculty Athletic Representative to act as one of five individuals authorized to contact the NCAA on behalf of its institution. The Representative assured academic integrity in the athletics program, fostered the student-athlete experience, and insured institution compliance with NCAA regulations. As a current member in 2017, The Ohio State University appointed its Faculty Athletic Representative through the Athletic Council and the University President. The representative served a term of four years.
