    Biographical / Historical Note

Physical education at Ohio State University began to be formally encouraged as early as 1881. In 1891, an Athletic Board was formed, a forerunner to the Athletic Council, but was mainly run by students. The Department of Athletics and Physical Training was established in 1898, and separated as two separate departments in 1911, though the Department of Athletics at Ohio State University is considered to be formally established in 1912. In 1912 Ohio State University joined the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives, ensuring faculty control of the Athletic Board and creating a Board of Control over intercollegiate athletics. The first athletic director and head coach was John R. Richards, appointed in 1912 and resigning a few months later. Lynn W. St. John was appointed as the next director in December 1912, serving until 1947. The campaign to build the Ohio Stadium began in 1920, and construction was completed in 1922, followed by other large athletic facilities such as the golf courses. As of 2017, the Department of Athletics on the Ohio State University campus operated as its own unit under the President's Office, led by a Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics.
