Abstract
Robert Joseph Kane (1897-1986) was an Ohio professor who taught at the Ohio State University's English Department from 1926-1965. In 1943, he notified the University that he was resuming work on a 466 page descriptive bibliography and resource for Shakespeare's King Lear, which he had been working on for several years. The finished work, King Lear in the Twentieth Century: A Bibliography and Reference Guide, was submitted to the University's press in 1945 for publication. He was recognized by the University as a Professor Emeritus in 1965. The materials in this collection are mainly papers, correspondence, and notebooks that deal with Kane's research on the Shakespearian play, King Lear. The King Lear manuscript was later published by University Press under the title King Lear in the Twentieth Century: A Bibliography and Reference Guide, which included summaries by Kane of important works and bibliographic materials from six different languages, including English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, and Greek.
