Biographical / Historical Note
The Ohio State University Department of Chemistry began in 1873, when Sidney Norton was the only, and first, professor in the department. The Department of Chemistry was one of the ten original departments at the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. Norton remained the only faculty member for twenty years until 1893 when William McPherson was appointed as an assistant professor. In 2012, the Department of Chemistry merged with the Department of Biochemistry to form the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
