    Biographical / Historical Note

The Department of Political Science and the Department of History at Ohio State University were combined in 1887 in order to make the Department of American History and Political Science. On July 1, 1909, the Department of Political Science and the Department of American History split and created separate departments for each subject. During the early years of the department’s establishment, the Department of Political Science maintained a small staff of professors. The department suffered even greater losses to the small staff when the Great Depression struck Ohio State University. However, the department grew in size during the 1940s and 1950s. In 1942, it began to offer coursework to a Ph.D. degree. The Department offered a new program initiative that allowed students to gain credit hours for working in a political campaign in 1970. As of 2017, the Department of Political Science offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science as well as a Bachelor of Arts in World Politics. The department also offers a graduate program in five different fields.
