Biographical / Historical Note
In 1882, Ohio State University established the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES) to direct agricultural research on campus. The Hatch Act of 1887 established federal funding for all land grant institutions to establish agricultural experiment stations, separating OAES from the University. The new Board of Control of the Station hired former OAES farm foreman Charles Thorne to be the Station's first director. In 1892, the Station moved to 470 acres in Wooster, Ohio. Thorne served as director of the Station until 1921, after which he continued to serve the Station as a consultant. His own professional research was in crop rotation and soil fertility.
