Carbon is emitted in the atmosphere when fossil fuels are used in the manufacture of various construction products. While this is also true of wood products, the carbon emitted in their production is less than that from the manufacture of other construction materials. In addition, more carbon is captured from the atmosphere and stored as part of the wood (in a process known as sequestration) than is emitted in its production. This phenomenon results in a negative net carbon emission.
