Emmet A. Conway (1914-2009) spent a lifetime researching and teaching the rich natural and cultural history of Southeastern Ohio. He was known as The Pathfinder by his preservation friends because of his wide-ranging knowledge of ancient indigenous trails, which date back thousands of years. For his study of indigenous paths in Ohio, Conway built on his training and experience as a forester and his extensive knowledge of Ohio’s natural history. For this fellowship project, he proposed to utilize federal land surveyor’s field notebooks to study Ohio’s pre-settlement history. Conway shared much of his research on his website The Olde Forester.
