In 1787, the U.S. Congress authorized the purchase of nearly 1.2 million acres in the Northwest Territory in present-day Ohio by the Ohio Company of Associates. In accordance with the land ordinance of 1785, the “Ohio Company Purchase” was surveyed using a rectilinear system between 1788 and 1802. To give each subscriber an equal division of land, different sizes of tracts were surveyed. The official plats of the Ohio Company contain section numbers, major streams, and list the names of original proprietors in association with their lots for each township.
