Wood flour is wood reduced to finely divided particles, similar to cereal flours. It is used in a variety of products from soil amendments (like fertilizers and non-organic materials), extenders for glue, and absorbents for explosives. One of the first commercial uses of wood flour is thought to have been a gearshift knob for a Rolls Royce in 1916. The most commonly used wood flours for plastic composites in the United States are made from pine, oak, and maple.
