Adolph Leue administered a survey of the state’s forest resources in 1885, the same year the Ohio State Forestry Bureau was established. The survey questionnaire was sent out to county and township officials to inquire about the “causes in operation to produce the waste and decay of forests in your township.” The report identified “clearing for agricultural purposes” as the primary reason for forest destruction in 79 out of 88 counties. As George A. Adams of Wood County observed, “Every farmer’s ambition is to have his woodland turned into great cornfields.”
The following year, Leue published “The Forestal Relation of Ohio” reporting on his findings.
