Known for his temper and unpredictable behavior on the field, Hayes spent much of his time off the field working tirelessly for a number of charities. He spent countless hours visiting patients at Children’s Hospital in Columbus and was also a frequent guest speaker at fund-raising events, using his fame and connections to bring in money to support a wide variety of large and small causes. During the Vietnam War, he made four trips overseas to visit with and entertain deployed servicemen and women.
