Have you ever wondered what the most popular computer programming languages in use were today? There have been efforts made to answer that question, even though they are not perfect.

One, named the TIOBE Index, evaluates the search rankings of languages to determine what is most popular. For more details about their ranking methods, you can take a look at this page

Another, potentially more accurate method, is to look at public repositories such as Github to evaluate which languages are generating the most activity. Keep in mind that this does not capture closed-source, privately-hosted repositories of code. To look at some of these statistics, you can go here.

Yet one more option, to determine what languages are most in demand, would be to look at the number of job openings concentrated around a particular language. One website, Stackify, has looked at this and come up with these results.

You will notice that there will be differences among these lists, but also a decent amount of overlap among the top 15. What’s actually most popular? An accurate answer is hard to come up with, but these rankings will give you a general idea as to which languages are generating the most amount of activity nowadays.
