Copyright Resources Center hosting OSU discussion group for copyright MOOC

Join the OSU Libraries’ Copyright Resources Center for weekly lunch & learn discussions to accompany the upcoming massive open online course (MOOC) “Copyright for Educators & Librarians.” The free online course is available on Coursera and will run from July 21-August 18. The OSU discussion group will meet each Thursday from 12-1pm for the duration of the course to review each week’s material and discuss any questions you might have. This is a great opportunity to review or learn for the first time about copyright issues and questions affecting teaching, libraries, and education.

The  “Copyright for Educators & Librarians” MOOC will be taught by Kevin Smith from Duke University, Anne Gilliland (formerly of OSU) from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Lisa Macklin from Emory University. Learn more about the course and sign up for the MOOC here: https://www.coursera.org/course/cfel

Sandra Enimil and Jessica Meindertsma from the OSU Libraries’ Copyright Resources Center will host weekly discussions in Thompson Library, Room 150A each Thursday from 12-1pm (bring your lunch!) for the duration of the course. If you would like to participate from a regional campus, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can arrange for web conferencing. All participants please RSVP to LibCopyright@osu.edu.

CopyrightX: The copyright MOOC

The libraries have been packed with students studying hard for finals over the past week, and we can relate. Your campus copyright librarians went back to school this spring to take part in CopyrightX: a massive open online course covering copyright law and reform produced by Harvard Law School the HarvardX distance-learning initiative, and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

CopyrightX offers an excellent resource for anyone seeking a comprehensive overview of copyright law and theory. Approximately 18 hours of lectures do not prove insurmountable, though another review accurately describes the course as “a fire-hose of concentrated information.” Lectures are carved up into smaller topical episodes which address specific areas of interest, such as the copyright of fictional characters or joint authorship.

Although the current semester is winding down, anyone may access the course content online and progress through the materials at his or her own pace. The syllabus on the CopyrightX website includes links to all course readings and lectures.

Accessibility, E-Book Readers, and Copyright Issues for Colleges and Universities

I’ll be at Innovate 2011 on Wednesday, April 27, talking about Accessibility, E-Book Readers, and Copyright Issues for Colleges and Universities with Ken Petri.   We’ll be on from 3:00-3:50 p.m.

Recent legal disputes over copyright and accessibility for e-books have highlighted the tensions in these two areas of law.  At the same time, accessible e-book formats and reader capabilities are developing rapidly.  Learn about conflicts between the rights of copyright holders and the rights of disabled students, accessibility features in popular e-book formats, and trends and compromises for the future.

Digital Media in a Social World Conference Starts April 1

The Digital Media in a Social World Conference at Ohio State University runs April 1-2. The theme is “Make Your Own Education,” and the keynote speaker on April 1 is Mark Frauenfelder, one of the founders of the Boing Boing blog and Wired Online.   Other speakers on April 1 will focus on Ohio State activities; the program on April 2 will emphasize state and regional speakers and issues.

There will, of course, be a copyright session on April 2, when I will facilitate a discussion that uses the documentary “Copyright Criminals” to discuss what is right and what is legal when using copyrighted work.

Video in Education, A Digital Media Collective Meeting

The next Digital Media Collective meeting will be “Video in Education: Focus on Technology” on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Thompson Library 150 A&B.  The meeting will be roundtable style, so participants may share their work with digital video in service to education and their biggest technology challenge.  A moderated discussion will follow, so bring your pressing questions about hosting, codecs, platforms, and best practices.

One subject for discussion will be  video search in general; how to best leverage caption information in a search; and how to integrate a video search into existing web infrastructure.

The session will be documented on the Digital Media Collective Wiki.

Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion, and Disability Conference in May

I am looking forward to the Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion, and Disability Conference, which will be held May 4-5, 2011 at Ohio State.  I am doing a presentation on copyright and disability, and I am very glad to be on the program.  All of the sessions look interesting, but for me the highlight will hearing Daniel Goldstein speak on “The Right to Digital Access: Current Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities.” Mr. Goldstein is counsel to the National Federation for the Blind and a very influential figure in disability law.  His address will be free and open to the public.

The registration fees for the conference are very reasonable.  There is a substantial discount for OSU faculty and staff, and the conference is free for students who attend sessions only.

GO.OSU: (Presentation and discussion, 30 min.)

Media Manager: (Presentation and discussion, 30 min.)
Allen S. Coleman and Mike Kaylor will present the roadmap for the realignment of the Media Manager tool, with a strict focus on teaching and learning and the development of Media Manager for Groups (MMG) sites for colleges, schools, departments and programs. Cross-system work @ OSU: (Full-group discussion, 20-30 min.)
Because we will have a great deal of expertise in the room, we will begin a broader discussion about how we might encourage the development of an application (for those looking for or linking to media) or a workflow (for those creating media) that will allow media to be discovered across systems at OSU.

Open Access Week 2010 Roundup

Open Access Week 2010 ended on October 22, and I am have (mostly) recovered from all the excitement.  Go over to the Digital Union blog to see my write-up of the week’s events, read some of the good things that people had to say about this year’s programs, and learn about how we intend to make this year’s content available on a long-term basis.

One of the most fulfilling things for me about Open Access Week was meeting our interesting, informative, and inspiring outside speakers.  Another has been the great planning group that worked on this year’s events.  Thanks to all of you.
