Thompson Library Research & Reference Practicum


The Research & Reference Services Practicum at The Ohio State University’s Thompson Library offers select students of Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science valuable hands on experience at an academic library reference desk and online using various virtual reference technologies.  This competitive program requires a minimum 150 hours of service and begins September 1st for fall semester (OSU fall quarter) and January 1st for spring semester (OSU winter quarter). Research & Reference duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Research & Reference service at the Thompson Library Information Desk.  (Students must be available to work the majority of their desk hours during periods of heaviest activity, between 10 am and 7 pm, Monday-Friday. Some evening and Sunday hours may also be required).    
  • Virtual reference via Meebo, OCLC’s Questionpoint, and the OSU Libraries 292-OSUL call center.
  • Participation in bi-weekly Research & Reference staff meetings and monthly Research & Education Departmental meetings.
  • Review and prepare presentation for Research & Reference faculty, staff, and students on resources available for selected subject area.

This position is under the general supervision of the Student Staff Supervisor, with indirect supervision from the Coordinator for Research & Reference services.
