Section Descriptions

The Cataloging Department consists of four sections: Western Languages Cataloging, Non-Roman Languages Cataloging, Authority Control and Database Maintenance and Electronic Theses and Dissertations.

Western Languages Cataloging

The Western Languages section is responsible for cataloging all works published in the Latin alphabet that require either original or complex copy cataloging. This includes but is not limited to English, French, German, Icelandic, Spanish, and Swahili language materials. This section also works on retrospective-conversion and special projects related to Western Languages.

The section currently consists of seven full-time employees as well as one Graduate Assistant and several students. Beverly McDonald is coordinator of the section, which includes Theresa Wei, Vera Enesey, Lisa Chiong, Jim Whitcomb, Vickie Fitzgerald, and Christina Moore.

Non-Roman Languages Cataloging

The Non-Roman Languages section is responsible for cataloging all materials in all formats that are published in non-Roman scripts. Languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Turkish and numerous other languages. Materials published in these languages are automatically sent to the cataloging department for processing. This section works closely with subject specialists and staff from East European and Slavic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies and East Asian Studies.

The coordinator for this section is Sherab Chen, who supervises two staff members and a team of graduate assistants and student workers. Anna Batchev catalogs all Slavic language items. In addition, over the past few years, she has cataloged several large gift projects. Zaineb Bayahy catalogs all Arabic language materials, and also helps out with French and English cataloging. She also supervises a graduate assistant who catalogs Turkish language materials. Both Anna and Zaineb catalog monographs as well as some serial and non-book format items. Sherab, Anna, Zaineb, and the student assistants are also available to contribute their language expertise to problem solving activities.

The section maintains a blog, and guidelines and instructions for non-Roman cataloging are being updated.

Authority Control and Database Maintenance

The Authority Control and Database Maintenance section is responsible for maintaining a high quality database. The section works to fix problems, improve records, and to ensure consistency with national and international standards. We work with people from all over campus, the regional campuses, the Health and Law libraries, OhioLINK, and beyond—correcting errors and enhancing access to records for everyone. We also improve WorldCat by enhancing and replacing bibliographic records. In addition, we make sure that our holdings are accurately reflected in WorldCat. Our work includes pulling together an author’s works under a single name heading, and also ensuring that subject headings are consistent and accurately reflect content, including cross-references. Through our work in WorldCat, we are part of an international cooperative effort with libraries so that information is shared and improved.

The Authority Control and Database Maintenance section currently consists of five full-time employees, one Graduate Assistant and two students. Melanie McGurr is the coordinator of the section and works with Andrea Moore, Stephanie Gilchrist, Lin Zhang and Ed Plunkett.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Electronic Theses and Dissertations section catalogs any work that is written by students and that is required for graduation. These unique works are deposited in the libraries in either print or electronic format and include the works of both graduate and undergraduate students. These documents consist of honors theses which can be accessed electronically via the Knowledge Bank, and geology theses which can be found both in the Knowledge Bank and in print form in the Geology Library. We also catalog print and electronic versions of master’s theses, as well as doctoral dissertations. Dissertations are submitted to OhioLINK’s Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Center and are also preserved on microfiche. Rocki Strader is the coordinator for this section, and she supervises one graduate assistant and one student assistant.
