四日市ぜんそく Yokkaichi Asthma
Yokkaichi Asthma is caused by sulfur oxide discharged from the petrochemical complex. Yokkaichi city is located in Mie prefecture facing the Ise bay (near Nagoya). The first complex has been in operation since 1960, and before long the asthma victims were increased. In 1965, the city began to pay medical expense for the victims of the pollution. The victims filed a lawsuit against six companies that have been operated in the complex (Ishihara Sangyo Co., Chubu Electric Power Company, Showa-Yokkaichi Sekyu, Mitsubishi Petrochemical Co., Mitsubishi Kasei Corporation, and Mitsubishi-Monsanto Co.), and they won in 1972.
