Richard S. Gummere

Richard Stanton Gummere was a native of Columbus, Ohio and resided at 65 Oakland Avenue. He was stood at 6 foot 1 1/2 inches, weighing at 162lbs with light hair and blue eyes. On May 1, 1918 he enlisted in the military and soon became a member of the Coast Artillery Battalion "C" of the 71st Artillery. By July 11, 1918 he was promoted to Corporal at Fort Audricus, and on July 31, 1918 he departed for Europe.
He kept a journal beginning on May 1, 1918 and continued until March 18, 1919. In addition to these entries, his collection includes one photograph, his military dog tags (quite different from present dog tags; they are round, about the size of a 50 cent piece, and held together by string) and corporal stripes and patch. Richard also wrote a letter home to his parents during his stay in England. The letter was published in a newspaper article and preserved with his journal.
