These materials are meant to complement the research previously done in 国立国語研究所報告 116 『日本語基本語彙──文献と解題──』（明治書院，2000年）. The bulk of the work is comprised of a table of basic vocabulary used in Japanese language education, compiled from a number of previous surveys, together with information on orthography, part of speech, and level of basic-ness.
CD-ROM
The CD contains .txt-format database source files delimited with commas (","), ready (almost) for import into database programs (e.g., Microsoft Excel). The root directory contains an aggregate database .txt-file of basic vocabulary words in Japanese. Each sub-directory in the CD-ROM is devoted to a sub-field of vocabulary in education (care-givers' speech, picture books, students' compositions, textbooks, kanzi, etc.) and contains a Microsoft Word file explaining the source and composition of the data, and a .txt source file. In each case, the labels for the data fields (database columns) are found in the Word files but not in the data source file.
