James Edwin Miller was a native of Steubenville, Ohio. He served in the United States military under the title of Captain Medical Corporal. He was 1st Lt. of the 429 N. 5th division. Miller had previously worked in the field of medicine and became member of medical corps during World War I. Throughout his journal is obvious that James was dedicated to his family and friends and home, and was also very religious. However, he was a bit older than the majority of men in the service, which was ultimately a bit alienating. He was able to garner important friendships with the other men working in the hospital and as well as men working at the YMCA on the base. His service was difficult and monotonous, completing nearly the same tasks everyday. He does a great deal of work on 'localization,' which is a procedure that involves collaboration between medical instruments and x-rays, to identify and repair bodily damage. In order for this to work correctly, mathematic equations are required, which were a bit difficult for James. His journal reveals not only the occurences of the war, his everyday work, and activites at the base, but also his personal feelings and favorite activities, such as taking long evening walks.

Also included in James' collection is his photographed portrait, discharge certificate, a newspaper clipping, a pay stub received while in France, and recorded are the words of "Watch Yourself Go By" by Strickland Gillian.
