The Urge to Escape Civilization
Based on a book by the same name, Sean Penn's 2007 film "Into the Wild" relates the story of Chris McCandless, a young man intent of breaking his ties with society (including his family) and escaping to into the Alaskan wilderness.
Historical Precedent
Of course, the life of Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) stands as a model for those who elect to find fulfillment in isolation. For some however, the need for physical challenge outweighs the philosophical aspect of such a choice, and that helps explain why many such adventurers meet their deaths.
