Initials, capital strokes, paragraph marks and underlining supplied in red. Fifteenth century editions frequently attributed to Johannes Gerson or Thomas a Kempis; sixteenth century, to Johannes Nider. This is the eighth of fourteen fifteenth century printings listed in GW. Amerbach presented 10 copies to the Basel Charterhouse in 1490 or 91.
Binding: Modern imitation vellum. All edges gilt.
Provenance: Signature on front endpaper: A T & N Atwood (?). Acquired ca. 1960.

The texts in this collection, purported to be by Myrsilius Lesbius, Cato, Archilochus, et. al., are forgeries by Annius. This edition probably extracted from that with Annius’ commentaries printed at Rome in the same year. Annius was a research interest of the late Francis Utley, whose papers contain many files of his notes.

Provenance: On al ownership note of monastery of Munchen Gladbach. Signature on front endpaper. Purchased 1985. From Koln, where this volume was bound, to Dusseldorf, the location of the 15th century monastic owner, is ca. 20 miles.

With commentary ascribed in the text to Thomas Aquinas (by GW to Thomas Waleys). Contains also the pseudo Boethius De discipiina scholariuin. First gathering is variant from descriptions in R, UW, Pell and Polain(B); other readings as in those sources. According to GW this edition was brought out in association with others by Antoine Lambillion (c1493), Johannes Fabre (c1496), Piere Marechal and Barnabe Chausard (c1498) and Perrine Le Masson (c1500); however, the first text in all of those eds. runs to 132 leaves; in this, to 128 only.

The outer third of the last leaf has been repaired and the missing text supplied in manuscript with errors and contractions that make it appear to be variant.

Continued for 1387 to 1460 by Caxton. This copy was owned in the sixteenth or seventeenth century by a strongly partisan Protestant who inked out all references to the Pope and to Purgatory. Has all of the misfolations mentioned in Pfrozheimer except that f.337 is correct and 338 in numbered 336 instead of 337. Also has the following misfoliations: 182 as 183, 191 as 181, 247 as 267 and 294 as 283. Accompanied by a separate leaf 29-2 (f.227), which is misnumbered 207. Not identified with any copy in DeRicci’s Census.
