Location code for withdrawn items

Background: When collecting booleans of bib records for particular locations, there is no way to exclude titles that are withdrawn. This is because withdrawn items remain on the system with regular item location codes and the location synchronization program maintains the corresponding 3-letter location codes in the bib records. One way to solve this problem would be to create a location code to be used for all withdrawn items. The same code (wth) could be used in the item and bib record to conserve codes. This change would make it much easier to exclude withdrawn titles and volumes when collecting statistics and producing reports. It would, however, mean an extra step in the withdrawal procedure (changing the item location code) and adding a note.

The DMSC and Users Committees have agreed that a single location code for withdrawn items is a good solution. Locations would be advised to change the location code to the withdrawn code (wth) when they changed the status. The location code would be displayed to the public as -- no longer owned. A short standardized note can be added by the staff doing the withdrawal to reflect the collection development decisions being made by the withdrawal (see examples which follow). The addition of the note is not required.

1.     An example of an item that is desired by the withdrawing location if it is found should be:
VET Jan 1997 (abbreviated month and date of withdrawal) wants
2.     An item which was weeded/deselected should read:
          VET Jan 1997 deselected

Sally Rogers will update all previously withdrawn titles to this location code (wth) and add a note indicating the location and a generic date.
