N.S. No. 11 May 1983
The revised Japanese romanization table and rules proposed by the Committee on East Asian Libraries' Subcommittee on Technical Processing has been adopted by the Library of Congress (LC). The revised table/rules are being adopted by the Ohio State University Libraries (OSUL). Since LC has begun to use the new rules, records are appearing in the name Authority File and National Union Catalog (NUC). All new processing and cataloging (both with copy and original) using NUC records for input of OCLC will follow the new romanization rules. For works already cataloged at OSUL, no recataloging will be done. The Music Materials classified in the M classification (i.e. M, ML, MT) and housed and shelved in the Main Library stacks and in the East Asian Collection on Deck 9 of the stacks are being transferred to the Music Library. The policy will be that Music-related materials will not be purchased for Main Library or shelved in the Main Library stack area; however Music-related materials will continue to be purchased for and shelved in the Reference Department and in any of the Reading Rooms. When these titles are no longer needed or volumes become obsolete, the titles are to be transferred to the Music Library. All locations should notify Music Library prior to the transfer of the M classified materials from these collections. Any Main Library selectors may purchase Music-related materials but when the titles are selected, processed, or cataloged and classified in M classification, the location will be changed to Music Library with no changes in fund accounts. In order to provide collection development decisions, Main Library selectors should consult the Music Librarian prior to ordering continuations, sets or other multi-volume titles for the Music Library; if a set contains separate volumes on Music-related topics, but the classification number for the set is not in the M classification, the entire set will remain in the Main Library stacks.
The holding symbol of "OSU" will be removed from the OCLC holdings file when the last or only copy of a title is withdrawn. The "withdrawn" condition code will be retained as LCS bibliographic information until a further change of this policy is made.
