NT Tips

Here’s a compilation of information from various sources regarding things we can do to help our computers operate better in this WindowsNT environment.

General Guidelines:

  • Don’t download programs!! If you need something for work purposes, let me check with IT on how we can get it and have it run successfully.
  • If you lose your network connection, your pc freezes, etc; close all open applications, re-start your computer and then wait 5 minutes or so before logging back in. This gives Thurber the time it needs to synch up

Eudora:

  • Keep In, Out and Trash mailboxes down to a maximum of 1M each. Eudora automatically opens these 3 mailboxes when it launches.
  • Use filters to re-direct mail to other mailboxes
  • Delete email messages when no longer needed
  • If you routinely keep a copy of every out-going message, consider not doing this, but cc: yourself on messages when necessary.
  • Close individual messages before you close their mailboxes or Eudora itself. Each open message uses memory.
  • The gray box with 3 bars (top one says "exit this instance") means your Eudora is locked, follow the unlock procedure

System response:

  • Routinely close (not minimize) un-needed applications. Each open application uses memory, even if it’s minimized
  • Close unnecessary windows/messages in Eudora (if you keep it running during the day), these all use cpu resources.
  • Run the disk de-fragmentation utility often, at least monthly, more often if you have a high degree of fragmentation
  • Regularly delete .tmp files
  • Don’t use your CD to play music CDs, this uses your cpu’s resources
