Novell Account Tips
Your user name is a combination of the 1st letter of your 1st name, followed immediately (no spaces) by the 1st 7 letters of your last name. If your last name has fewer than 7 letters, it uses your entire last name. (Examples: Ben Smith would be bsmith, Harry Wilmington would be hwilming)
Your decision as to what you want this to be. It must be at least 5 characters in length, and can be a combination of letters and/or numbers. It is case-sensitive, so if you set this up using capital letters, you must use capital letters each time you log in.
Type your user name in the username box, using all lower case letters. Then hit <TAB>, do not use your mouse. Watch carefully, and you should see your computer change the 1st letter of your user name from lower case to upper case. THIS CHANGE HAS TO HAPPEN OR YOU WONT BE ABLE TO LOG IN. I’ve also experimented with typing my user name capitalizing the 1st letter, only to have the login attempt fail, so having your computer make this change for you seems to work (most of the time).
Type your password in the password box, then hit
NOTE: If you try to log into your account before your computer has totally completed launching, you’re more likely to have your computer NOT make the change in your username. Wait until your hard drive stops making noises before you start to log in.
NOTE: If you get a grey dialog box after the above, saying something about co-ordinating your password, your log in attempt has failed. Click cancel and start over, making sure the computer makes the change in your username.
NOTE: If you try to log into a pc and get the message saying you’re trying to log in at too many machines, wait a few minutes and try again. Sometimes, Thurber takes a few minutes to recognize the fact you’ve logged out of 1 machine (this is called "synching").
Launch your pc using your username and current password. Once your pc is up and running on your account, hold down
NOTE: changing your Novell account password has absolutely no effect on your other passwords, such as Eudora (email), Felix, etc.
Screensavers are now automatically set to activate after a specified period of keyboard/mouse inactivity.
You can change the length of time before your screensaver activates by clicking on: Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/ScreenSaver Tab, then change the numeric value in the box next to "Wait:". Changes to the length of time before your screensaver seem to "stick" from one Novell session to another.
You can also turn off the password requirement, for the duration of your current Novell session, follow the same path as above and click to remove the check mark from in front of "password protect". De-activation of your password requirement does not "stick" from one Novell session to another. If you want to turn off this feature, you must do so each time you log into your Novell account.
Note: Once the screensaver activates, it can only be turned off by the user who’s logged into that computer. Follow the directions on the screen.
We are now all authorized to be logged into 2 machines at the same time. Please keep track of where you’re logged in, and be sure to log out of each machine when you no longer need to use it. Please also remember that you are responsible for all activity that occurs on a machine while it’s logged in to the network on your Novell account.
Be sure to follow the correct sequence when shutting down your computer (or logging off of your Novell account). It’s vital that Windows NT go through this shut down sequence (Start/Shut Down/ Shut down your computer [restart your computer] [close all programs and log on as a different user]) to allow it time to tidy up file space, etc. Failure to follow the shut down sequence may result in hard drive problems.
