Facsimiles Reproductions
The current OSUL policy for cataloging photocopy facsimile reproductions made for preservation purposes is to add the facsimiles copy to OSCAR as copy number "2" and to mark the original copy as withdrawn. That means that cataloging does not create a new record for the facsimile and does not contribute this record to the OCLC international database. When patrons request such a book they cannot determine from the bibliographic record if the item is the original volume or a facsimile. This may grow in its importance to the patron in the future. The OSUL will follow Library of Congress policy for creating new records for facsimile reproductions and for preservation purposes (See Cataloging Service Bulletin, no.61 (summer 1993 pp-3-4) for the procedures and guidelines). The Library of Congress policy for reproductions of previously existing materials that are made for preservation purposes in formats other than microforms and for non-microform dissertations and other reproductions produced "on demand" IS TO CREATE A NEW RECORD FOR THE REPRODUCTION.
