Re: Copy Cataloging Guidelines Can Now Be Viewed Online
From: Marsha Hamilton, Head, Acquisitions Department
Most new books in English and other Western languages have available cataloging copy on OCLC, which in general requires minimal editing to be accepted as the OSCAR catalog record. This includes any individual new book, added volumes to monographic sets, and added copies.
The Copy Cataloging Guidelines used by the Acquisitions Department to copy catalog firm orders at time of receipt, approval titles selected by collection managers, and gifts and en bloc collections is available on the Technical Services website at:
It is listed on the Documentation menu under both:
"Cataloging" work flow
"Monographs" material type
These Guidelines cover what fields and bibliographic information the Acquisitions Department does and does not review and enhance while copy cataloging. The Cataloging Department, Special Collections Cataloging, and other cataloging centers also use these basic Guidelines but may also enhance additional fields due to the more complicated materials they handle.
As always, the goal of the Acquisitions Department is to acquire the monographs you need, make sure they can be paid for, and get them to you as quickly as possible. If you find that an OSCAR record needs to be enhanced further than this standard level to serve your patrons' needs (regardless of the department where the title was cataloged), please send your request to:
Melanie McGurr (mcgurr.2@osu.edu), Cataloging Department, 7-4689
Thank you.
