Issues/Questions re: Single vs multiple bib options Major Issues
I. Single v. separate records for multiple formats:
- Just for "exact" digital versions of print materials?
- Just for monographs?
- How do we handle updated e-versions?
- For serials, how do we determine if e-version is identical?
- How do we handle non-identical e-versions?
- How do we handle e-versions from different distributors?
- What about other non-print formats, such as audio, video, microform?
2. Serial? or monograph? Definitions by nature of material rather than physical format:
- Are volumes of serials on CD still serial in nature, even though the CD is a single item?
- Should continuously updated online databases be treated as ongoing and handled as serial in nature?
- Should a database containing full-text articles of serials be monographic if not regularly updated?
3. Collection level v. individual title level cataloging:
- Should we build collection level records for Project Muse and Catchword so patrons can search across all journal titles in that collection?
- For web sites, such as those for scholarly societies that include data as well as serials be cataloged both as a database (collection level) and as separate serial titles?
4. Web site cataloging:
- How do we define a web site v. a database or an e-mono or e-journal?
- What criteria do we use for defining a web site?
Secondary Issues:
5. Format preferred for single record: Consistent choice v. formats held by institution:
- If a single record is preferred, does a specific format takes precedence?
- If a library does not own the preferred format, can they catalog the secondary format as a separate?
- If so, what happens that library or another OhioLINK library acquires the preferred format?
6. Questions regarding cataloging guidelines:
- If all formats are not combined into a single bib, should the use of Uniform Titles be mandated?
- Is an added entry for publisher or vendor of electronic collections, eg. Project Muse, acceptable, or must that be restricted to local practice?
- Will OhioLINK designate a format for the "Restrictions on access" notes?
- Will OhioLINK designate content for Lib Has notes for e-products?
7. Questions regarding OhioLINK policy:
- Will OhioLINK require a uniform approach to records in Central ?
- Will guidelines for contributions to Central allow customizing at local sites?
- Will different e-versions be merged into a single bib?
