Barcode Placement
There is much confusion about what our current policy is on the placement of barcodes on library materials. In consultation with Circulation, Technical Services, and Preservation, we have found no definitive policy statement on this issue. As a result, we believe that various groups have been operating with different practices. As of this moment, the operating practice the majority of people hold follows:
|
The policy states that the barcode is to go in the upper right corner only if it doesn't obscure text. Otherwise, it must be placed however far down on the right side as necessary, including the lower right. This is the policy (of not obscuring ANY text on the back of books) because some locations do use that information.
|
The current copy cataloging guidelines make the following statements about these issues:
|
Barcode: Place on back cover in upper right hand corner. Do not overlap onto spine crease or obscure any text. To keep text visible, place barcode as far down the right side of book as necessary [Barcode can be placed at the bottom right of back cover, if necessary]
|
Some people have complained that it seems strange to see a barcode at the bottom of the back cover but that is correct according to policy.
It is clear to us that throughout technical processing and the Libraries in general not all of the individuals who process material have the same understanding of the policy.
Discussion:
| 1. | Is this policy correct? Does everyone agree that this is how the barcode should be placed on library material? |
| 2. | If not, what alternative do we propose? |
| 3. | If yes, we will codify the policy, include it on the technical services web site, incorporate the policy into training of new staff, and clarify the policy with existing staff. |
We appreciate the issue being raised so that we are able to investigate it, clarify the policy, and inform the rest of the system.
