SPECIAL   COLLECTIONS   CATALOGING   (SCCAT)

Cataloging Guidelines: Specific Collections

Guidelines for Acquiring, Receiving and Cataloging
Non-English Cartoon Books and Continuations
To Be Housed in CGA

August, 2000
(Revised September, 2000)

Collection Development

The Cartoon Research Library focuses on printed cartoon art. It does not collect works about animation except as they relate to printed holdings (such as animation by Winsor McCay since the library holds the largest public collection of his printed work). CGA seeks to develop a comprehensive research collection on printed cartoon art. Because of this, and because it offers security for its holdings, CGA is the designated site for copy 1 of cartoon-related materials at OSUL, regardless of the subject matter of the cartoons or the language in which they are composed.

Although it is not feasible to collect non-English cartoon publications comprehensively, CGA does seek to have representative examples of work by leading cartoonists from around the world. Language and Area Studies bibliographers are encouraged to contact CGA's collection manager when the opportunity to purchase books of collected cartoons, cartoon exhibition catalogues, and/or works about cartooning come to their attention. CGA accounts will be used to purchase these items, but it is helpful if the collection manager who located the material can place the order, indicating CGA as the location for the title. For expensive items, sharing the cost between accounts may be desirable.

Language and Area Studies bibliographers may also be of assistance in identifying materials currently in Main stacks which should be transferred to CGA due to their format, content, and/or condition.

Receiving and Cataloging Materials Ordered by Language and Area Studies Bibliographers

Cartoon materials in all languages ordered by Language and Area Studies bibliographers for CGA should be received, checked in, given the CGA streamer, and sent directly to CGA in a locked bin via Libraries delivery. For non-Roman language materials (excluding Japanese manga), SCCAT staff will review the materials periodically on-site and consult with language catalogers in the Cataloging Department. Security precautions should be observed by placing these books in the locked storage area of SCCAT when not actually being cataloged. In addition SCCAT should be consulted if there are any questions about how to catalog a work. No bar codes or labels should be used and book jackets should remain on the books. When cataloging is completed, titles should be directed to the Head, SCCAT, for review, after which they will be sent to CGA in a locked bin via Libraries delivery.
