Cataloging Guidelines: General
First look in the OSCAR authority record to see if an artist number has already been recorded for this author. If it has, use that base number and first cutter, and just adjust the second cutter to fit OSUL's shelflist.
If you are establishing a new number, there are two classes to choose from in most cases: NC & PN. Use NC for artists who draw predominantly single-frame, non-narrative cartoons, or for any work which is collected because of its illustrator (such as an illustrated edition of a novel by a famous artist). Use PN for artists who draw connected sequences of drawings, strips, stories, etc. Numbers in the two classes are constructed differently. Both classes provide different numbers for artists of different nationalities.
There will also occasionally (rarely) be some informational works with cartoon illustrations or works in which the cartoons are a secondary feature, and which feature the work of multiple illustrators. Such works belong in the topical classes A-Z. For topical works by a single illustrator, prefer classification under the NC number for the collected illustrator, even if the work is primarily topical, rather than illustrative.
Add the date to all call numbers.

CLASS NC - CUTTERING UNDER SPECIFIC COUNTRY NUMBERS
All the NC numbers are cuttered accordingly to the same pattern, except the last (NC1762 "Other")
The first cutter is for the artist, A-Z. Base the cutter on the established form of the name (which may be real name, pseudonym, etc.). If the established form of the name changes later, continue to use an old established cutter, even though it may no longer have the same initial letter as the name. Do not reclassify to assign a new author cutter.
The second cutter designates the title of the work, as it appears in the title proper (field 245) of the bibliographic record. This cutter is NOT A-Z in this class. The number must be chosen from the sliding range A6-79. Try to choose a number in that range which will allow for future works to be added with titles earlier or later in the alphabet.
Note: Second cutter practice is based on Table V in the N schedule.
| Examples: | NC1499.B43 A4 1955 |
| NC1499.B43 A65 1959 |
NC - CUTTERING UNDER "OTHER COUNTRIES"
For any country not accounted for on the list (e.g. Guam), use the basic number NC1762. For the first cutter, find a number for the country (see List of countries in Shelflisting Manual.) Affix a "2" on the end of the country number. This "2" signifies that the second cutter is for artist. Construct a second cutter for the author's name. Do not make any cutter for the title of the work. If you have two works by the same author under NC1762, use adjacent numbers.
CLASS PN - BASIC NUMBER
In class PN, there are specific numbers for cartoon "Special artists, A-Z" under the following countries:
| PN6727 | United States |

Do not reclassify to assign a new author cutter.
The second cutter designates the title of the work, as it appears in the title proper (field 245) of the bibliographic record. This cutter is A-Z. Fit the title cutter into the range A61-Z458.
