Special Collections Cataloging Department
Quarterly Report: January - March 2009

ARV

Beth and Rai met with librarians from the regional campuses to discuss how to process and make accessible their archival materials. SCCAT is available to consult with regionals staff when needed to help with creating collection-level records or other forms of access.

CGA

Cataloging of new materials is up to date. Very little remains of the "books" from Jay Kennedy, and the student is cataloging comic books from the International Museum of Comic Art collection. Anca cataloged a bin of foreign language comics and serials, and Pat created a number of collection level records with links for various CGA collections.

CHA

An additional 20 boxes of Charvat were sent over for cataloging. New additions are in the process of being completed. NACO work is now caught up, since staff in the Cataloging Department finished a backlog of authority work. Mary, Joan, and Nataliya continue to work on this collection.

HIL

When Nataliya returned from an extended leave, some additional materials from the Sofronov collection were identified and cataloged. She also cataloged two boxes of microfiche plus recent acquisitions.

RARE

Anca cataloged two trucks from the Tarver collection, and started cataloging rare books (new acquisitions and donations) that have accumulated while Tarver was the first priority.

Pat cataloged materials from the Avant Writing Collection, along with some non-collection items. He also assisted Sang Kyo with problems that arose in her workflow.

Dennis Gordon is part of a pilot project in Special Collections Cataloging, and this quarter he cataloged a variety of materials from several collections in Rare, including cookbooks, Tarver, and Irish collection.

TRI

Anca finished processing, cataloging and barcoding the collections from Archive 1 in anticipation of the move. She began cataloging two volumes of bound with sheet music in French, which are very scare and require original records. Each volume has approximately forty scores.

Joan cataloged miscellaneous items from various collections as part of the move preparation .

Knowledge Bank and other Metadata Projects

Joan cataloged the Antarctic Deep Freeze Oral History Project recordings. Morag is working with Maureen Walsh to automate conversion of the MARC records to contribute the transcripts to the Knowledge Bank. Work continues on University Archives materials in Knowledge Bank

Collection Management System (CMS)

The database from the Historic Costume and Textiles Collection was converted to PastPerfect. This is the first collection to include images. OSUL decided to pursue PastPerfect Online as the public search interface for Cartoon Library and Museum. The purchase was made in March and we expect to implement in the coming months.

Professional Development, Grants, etc.

Practicum student Moriana Garcia worked on project to compile and analyze WorldCat Local usage and impact data under Morag’s supervision. Morag also taught a session of the ALCTS Fundamentals of Acquisitions online course in February and March, co-presented a workshop at the ALAO Support Staff Interest Group, and led a New Student Orientation session and co-presented Millennium Create Lists with Brian Miller.

Beth and Morag attended the ALA Midwinter conference and participated in numerous relevant meetings and programs.
