SPECIAL   COLLECTIONS   CATALOGING   (SCCAT)

Special Collections Cataloging Department
Quarterly Report: October - December 2008

CGA

Cataloging of new books is up to date, and Mary has begun working on materials from the Jay Kennedy collection. The comic book student is working on comics from the International Museum of Comic Art collection.

CHA

Nataliya, Mary, and Joan continued to work on Charvat project cataloging, including establishing NACO records for authors. The “backlog” collection is approximately one-third complete. We hope to continue this progress so that more materials will be individually cataloged for the move, instead of in boxes as they are currently stored at the Depository.

HIL

Nataliya completed cataloging material from the Sofronov collection that will be added to Rare Books and Manuscripts, the Theatre Research Institute, and the Music Libraries. She also cataloged donations and new acquisitions.

RARE

Anca and Pat continue work on the Jerry Tarver collection. Pat also created collection records for Rare and assisted Sang-Kyo with problem-solving and cataloging non-English items.

TRI

Anca continues to barcode collections for the move, including processing materials where appropriate. Nataliya cataloged Slavic language materials from the Norris Houghton collection. Joan continued to work on materials that are emerging as the move preparation proceeds, creating collection-level records for barcoding in particular. She continues to catalog her normal ongoing flows, as well.

Knowledge Bank and other Metadata Projects

Work continued to University Archives collections added to the Knowledge Bank, as well as materials from the Ukranian Emigration collection, the first batch of which has been loaded.

Morag applied for a BETHA grant to fund conversion of finding aids to EAD using the OhioLINK finding aid repository.

Joan began work on creating catalog records for an additional set of polar oral histories, whose transcripts will be added to the Knowledge Bank.

Collection Management System (CMS)

Data from the Cartoon Library and Museum and Historic Costume and Textile Collections have been sent for conversion. Additional training was conducted for collections staff.

Professional Development, Grants, etc.

Morag participated in interviews conducted as the first phase of the NEH-funded "Reliable Witness” project. She also co-taught workshops for COASIS and for University Libraries, as part of the Training Advisory Council. She reviewed proposals for the NASIG 2009 conference.

Beth is working with members of the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee and staff from OCLC to integrate the RBMS controlled vocabularies into the OCLC Terminologies Service. They plan to have a version ready for review by the ALA Midwinter Meeting.

Other initiatives

Summer volunteer Libby Hertenstein also prepared training sessions and documentation on how to use Web Management Reports for generating collection use statistics. Training was attending by staff from Rare Books and Manuscripts and CGA and is available in the shared drive for anyone to consult as needed.

Professional Development, Grants, etc.

Morag and Beth both served on task forces as part of the OSUL 2013 strategic planning initiative.

Morag is now chairing the WorldCat Local Working Group, including regular conference calls with OCLC on the ongoing changes to the platform and follow-up on new and ongoing problems. She presented an update on WorldCat Local to the Collections Advisory Council. The Working Group anticipates working on the expected re-implementation of WorldCat Local this fall. Beth is serving on a task force to examine special collections records in WorldCat Local.

While Beth was on SRA, Morag collaborated on an LSTA grant proposal with Malabar Farm State Park to contribute their holdings to the OSUL catalog. This project was funded and work has begun to make this happen.

The NEH awarded funding to “Reliable Witnesses”, a project led by Lewis Ullman and Melanie Schlosser, to explore the sustainablity and integration of digital humanities into libraries. Morag will be contributing to this project as well.
