  1. CRL Proposals

Carol Diedrichs distributed descriptions of microform sets CRL are considering purchasing. Carol will be voting on the purchases on behalf of OSUL. She will look into what titles OSUL already owns and vote accordingly.

  2. Selection and Cataloging of Free Internet Resources

Trisha Davis indicated that she and Tschera Connell will be drafting CORC policies and procedures for collection managers and S/ER staff for the selection and cataloging of free Internet resources. Trisha expects to have the procedures drafted by January 19, 2001.

A discussion occurred surrounding whether the collection managers would be requested to add subject headings to the sites they submit for cataloging. The major issue was the standard that would be applied to the subject headings: Would they have to use LC subject headings or could they use any terms that describe the material? After discussion, the group consensus was that the latter option was appropriate; the collection manager would describe the intellectual content of the site which would then allow the technical services staff to assign the proper LC subject headings. If a collection manager wants a particular classification to be assigned to the website, he/she can make that request to S/ER.

Another issue that must be resolved is the level of the websites that will be cataloged. Should we catalog the more general homepage and in a note refer to the specific documents that are linked from the homepage or should we catalog the individual specific pages? This issue was not fully discussed and was not resolved; however, members indicated that there were situations when the more specific page should be cataloged.

Trisha would like to have a few collection managers to experiment with CORC from mid-January to mid-March to see if the procedures are effective.

Trisha will provide CAC with a demonstration of the CORC procedures at the January 25, 2001 meeting.

  3. Tracking of Licensing Agreements In-Process

Trisha Davis distributed copies of a chart showing the status of licensing agreements S/ER is negotiating. The chart is available from the Technical Services portion of the Library's homepage. CAC indicated that the information in the chart was very useful.

  4. Review of Current Allocations

Carol Diedrichs plans on examining the current allocations of both serials and monographs and is determining the procedures she wants to follow. She will be reviewing the historical data for each fund and will discuss current and future collection needs and curriculum changes with each collection manager. Duke recently undertook this review, and Carol is interested to see how they approached the task.

A question raised was should faculty members be involved in the allocation review process? It was decided that the onus is on collection managers to discuss current and future needs with faculty members and deans, and to impart that information to Carol during the review.

  5. Materials Budget Allocation

Carol Diedrichs distributed a copy of her presentation entitled Understanding the Library Materials Budget and asked for comments. She plans on presenting this information to a future Collection Managers Forum, ASC, and to a meeting of all the technical services staff. CAC members made a couple of suggestions, but in general found the presentation to be very useful and informative.
