  1. DISC proposals
Wes Boomgaarden joined the meeting to discuss the six digitizing proposals the Libraries' Digital Initiatives Steering Committee is evaluating. CAC reviewed each proposal and provided a content assessment for consideration in DISC's overall review of these proposals.

  2. CM Forum agenda for August 21, 2002
CAC discussed and identified the following agenda items for the August 21 Collection Manager's Forum:
    • Knowledge Bank project – Joe Branin
    • Discontinuing some local cataloging practices – Magda El-Sherbini
    • Handling special collections donated to non-Special Collections units – Rai Goerler
    • CRL on-demand-purchases – Carol Diedrichs
    • Serials Solutions trial – Carol Diedrichs

  3. Serials Solutions Proposal
CAC discussed establishing a trial with Serials Solutions in order to offer patrons an alphabetic list of electronic journals we have access to via aggregated databases such as Lexis Nexis. The full text titles in these aggregations are somewhat unstable and not available currently in OSCAR. The databases to be included can be selected by OSU from a list of those offered by Serials Solutions. There is some concern about offering such a list and not directing users to OSCAR. CAC discussed whether Serials Solutions should be asked to generate a list that includes e-journal titles already included in OSCAR or a list that excludes titles already included in OSCAR. CAC members were split on this issue and could not reach any consensus. Carol will take the proposal to the Executive Committee with these two options.

  4. Shelf Ready Approval Options
CAC recommended holding a special open forum regarding shelf-ready approval books in the fall. In addition, CAC recommended inviting someone from an institution who is using this process to give a brief presentation and answer questions. Carol will pursue the feasibility of this.

  5. Next Brown Bag Lunch
CAC will hold its next brown bag lunch for collection managers in late October. The agenda will include a discussion of the role of the individual collection managers on CAC. In addition, the lunch will be a time for general discussion of issues of concern.

  6. NetLibrary Usage data and extension of purchases
Carol distributed some sample statistics on OSU's use of netLibrary titles. OhioLINK will be restarting its purchase process soon focusing on 2001 and 2002 imprints and a more limited list of publishers. One primary question is whether OSU should also purchase titles on its own behalf which are not covered by the OhioLINK collection. At Carol's request, netLibrary produced a list of titles available electronically and not purchased by OhioLINK in the disciplines of architecture, economics/business, engineering and fine arts. She will post all the statistical information and the complete lists provided by netLibrary in the CAC shared group space so CAC members can review the information for the next meeting.

  7. Next meeting — the next meeting is scheduled for August 22, 2002, 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in 102 Main Library
