CAC Report to the Faculty
February 14, 2002
Submitted by Carol Diedrichs, Chair

Activities to date -

  1. One time funds - the Council made one calls for proposals for one-time funding to collection managers in early 2001. This final calls for fiscal year 2001 dispensed approximately $500,000 in funds to collection managers for spending. The list of approved requests can be found on the Technical Services web site via the CAC menu at 1tm3801.htm.

  2. After discussion at the spring Collection Managers Forum, all OSUL withdrawn item records were suppressed from public view in OSCAR and not sent to OhioLINK Central. CAC also approved the recommendation from the Collection Managers Forum that all remaining items with status "v" - barcode snag, be withdrawn.

  3. On behalf of the Council, Carol held a meeting with all new (within last 5 years) collection managers to discuss what the Council could be doing to help them. One outcome was to start a series of Brown Bag lunches with informal discussion of topics of interest to collection managers. Two Brown Bags have been held to date - one on approval plans and one strategies for working with faculty.

  4. For the first time in at least 10 years, in spring 2001, collection managers were asked to make brief reviews of their collections including requests for additional funding. We were delighted with the quality and thoughtfulness of the documents provided by each collection manager. Requests for funding for serials and monographs was accepted. Unfortunately, as the materials budget situation (and the general university budget) deteriorated, we were not able to grant any permanent allocations in funding. However, one-time funding for monographs was provided to most funds who requested, though not at the full level requested. We were unable to act on any of the serial funding requests.

  5. Serials cancellation planning - The majority of the Council's attention since June has been focused on planning for a serials cancellation project. The Council has reviewed budget scenarios and plans recommended by the Serials/Electronic Resources Department. Their comments and ideas have refined the plan which is now in active implementation.

Ongoing activities -

  1. Review of policies on storage and duplication.

  2. Serials cancellation planning
