Definition: Logging on to OSCAR for staff update functions is the process of selecting Felix as the working version of OSCAR, and then logging on as staff using a form of identification based on department affiliation.

Policy: Staff are trained and authorized to perform updates appropriate to their work assignments. Within update, various levels of authorization apply.

Menu options vary according to level of authorization.

Procedure:

  1. Choose Felix in one of three ways:


    1. Click on OSCAR/Felix icon on your desktop
    2. Click on START>PROGRAMS> TELNET > Telnet to OSCAR/Felix


or, a third option for cataloging staff is to open Felix through Passport for Windows

1.3 Click on Passport for Windows>OPEN>Felix

  1. Logon to Felix using department logon and password (ask supervisor)


  2. Select OSCAR/Felix subsytem in which update transactions are allowed:


2.2 Location library staff

Select C > CIRCULATION subsystem

Select A > ADDITIONAL circulation functions

Select U > UPDATE an item record

key in your initials and password

Select S > SUMMARY of all attached records (recommended for basic update)

2.3 Technical services and other authorized staff

Select D > Catalog DATABASE maintenance

Select U > UPDATE existing records

key in your initials and password

Select S > SUMMARY of all attached records (recommended for basic update)



  1. At the "Record:" prompt, type information to search for the record on which work.


Note: examples are made up; or, records may be deleted and responses differ over time.

Spacing: no space after record number prefix (.b, .i, etc.)

optional space after INNOPAC tag (c, a, t, etc.)

include in call number before ending date

OR, if not found, re-key without space before ending date

Capitalization: all lower case is OK, capitalization is optional

Punctuation: include decimals in call number classification; optional before Cutter #

punctuation is optional in titles, authors, series, etc.

4.1 by record number: i.######## or .b######## ­ most specific

4.2 by LC call number: c[call number] ­ specific

  1. Continue with the kind of update transaction, according to training and authorization:


Create (add a record to OSCAR/Felix)

Update (change, add or delete a value or other content in a fixed or variable field)

Delete (remove a field or an entire record)

Link or unlink (item records or course reserves)
