Subject: Children's Subjects in OSCAR and the AF

Date: March 21, 2005

From: Noelle Van Pulis

To: Catalogers

This is informational, for those who may be unfamiliar with LC Children's subject heading in bibliographic records and the authority file, and their treatment in OSCAR.

Children's Subjects in OSCAR and the AF

Bibliographic records can contain headings for children's material, and these headings might be the same as or different from the way the topic is described in LCSH.

In some cases, the LC Children's heading could be the opposite of the same heading as specified in LCSH,a or could have different cross-references.

Both LCSH and Children's headings are indexed, however, in the same online subject authority file in OCLC. Both are listed in the printed LCSH, with the Children's headings appearing in v.1 of LCSH (27th ed.) in a section labeled "Annotated Card Program, AC Subject Headings."

In OCLC documentation, in the section for MARC tags 6xx:,
http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/6xx/650.shtm
* headings from LCSH have indicator value of 0.
* headings for Children's have indicator value of 1.

When searching the authority file, to distinguish a Children's topic from LCSH or a comparable name authority record, note the prefix designation in the authority record: sj for Children's, sh for LCSH and n, no, nb, or nr for names.
