Memorandum

Subject: ISBN change to 13 digits

Date: August, 2004

From: Noelle Van Pulis, Cataloging Department

To: Technical Services and TSC (Technical Services Committee)

Having received some questions following the Technical Services Division meeting last Thursday, which I unfortunately missed, I am sharing the following links for your possible use.

OCLC Interim Support for ISBN 13 [dated 05-02-2004]
http://www.oclc.org/news/announcements/announcement96.htm
This document includes searching information as well as instructions for input in original and copy cataloging records. The longer number must be entered in field 024^3, not 020.

Sample number to test search in OCLC: 9780757995170

ISBN Change
-- Frequently Asked Questions
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/iso/tc46sc9/isbn.htm
Includes links, e.g. to Guidelines for Implementation (.pdf document).
This answers the questions I was asked and more.

Field 024 - "Other Standard Identifier"

--in MARC 21
http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/ecbdnumb.html#mrcb024
First indicator value of 3 defines content of field as "International Article Number" (EAN).
This is a European-derived convention (see link below).

-- in OCLC Bibliographic Format
http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx/024.shtm
Same definition as at the MARC 21 site. States the EAN is 13 digits; refers to prefixes for serials and paperback books. Not sure why the reference to paperbacks only.

-- EAN
http://www.ean-int.org/
Gives history of European Article Number and related links. Started with 12 European countries but has expanded to more than 100. Designed to be UPC compatible.

OSCAR
Field 024 is currently indexed as "Other Number." Any 13-digit ISBN in an OCLC record brought into OSCAR (or added to an existing OSCAR record) will be searchable that way now.

In the "Update" menu, at the 'Record:' prompt, it is the letter 'u' (instead of 'i' for ISBN or ISSN).
In the "Search" menu, it is N> Other numbers.

In web OSCAR, this is kind of hidden in the menu on the right side of the screen. There is a drop-down menu box that says "Find call numbers" but if you scroll down in that box, you find "Other Number."

Here is an example on a recently cataloged book:

     9780131019676

The label on the public display is "Isrn." Above it is "ISBN."

OhioLINK
At catalog home page, select "All search options" then "Other numbers."

The work that appears in OSCAR is also at OhioLINK:

     9780131019676

Here is one that was entered by a public library.

     9780756401306

And one entered in original cataloging by the State Library of Ohio:

     9780760747780

Comment: It would be possible to index field 024 numbers in the same index as 020 or 022, if this was determined to be desirable. Or, a different solution might be to identify only the 13 digit numbers for indexing in the same index as ISBN. For now, there are guidelines for input as well as an option for searching in both OSCAR and OhioLINK.
