Background: In the past the Cataloging Department has not applied barcodes to maps and other materials cataloged in the "Maps format". In the fall of 1997 OCLC converted 28,000 member-input records and 17,000 LC records for atlases from the Books format (fixed field Type: a) to the Maps format (fixed field Type: e). And according to OCLC, "all OCLC members should be inputting atlas records in format type "e". So atlases now are coming through the system in Maps format and not receiving bar codes because of our policy of not Bar coding maps.
Recommendation: OSUL policy should be amended to say that atlases (in book form) should be
treated the same as books and receive a barcode when they are cataloged.
