Research Guide: Finding Books
Library Catalogs
OSU students, faculty, and staff have access to a wide variety of resources through a set of catalogs and shared collections. Because library catalogs are highly structured, it pays to be aware of the tricks of the trade. Here is a brief tutorial on the major features of a library catalog , with classical examples.Full-Service Resources (search, place holds)
OSCARThe OSU Libraries main catalog, with holdings from the Main Library and the fifteen departmental libraries on campus.
OhioLINK
A catalog shared among all the academic libraries in Ohio. Members of the OSU community can place holds on materials
anywhere in Ohio by using their university ID.
CIC
A catalog shared by all the Big Ten universities, plus the University of Chicago. Again, holds can be placed by any member of the OSU community.
Search-Only Resources (search or Interlibrary Loan only)
OCLC WorldCATThe catalog of the largest library consortium in the world, with over 50 million records. Not available for direct use, but an
excellent resource for Interlibrary Loan requests.
Library of Congress
The Library of Congress holds at least one copy of everything published in the United States. Another excellent ILL resource.
Libweb
Links to the online catalogs of thousands of libraries in over a hundred countries.

Book Reviews
Book reviews can be a big help to a research project. A scholarly
book review will frequently compare a book to others on the same subject,
thus providing you more clues on where to look. But more importantly,
a book review will evaluate the quality of the work, usually in some
detail.| Title |

Dissertations
Dissertations and theses are an important resource for researchers, particularly if what you need to do is to quickly assemble a bibliography on your topic. If you can find a dissertation on your topic a lot of that work will already have been done for you.| Dissertation Abstracts International
