The Ohio State University

The Collections Advisory Council has completed its review and recommendations about additional funding. I have completed a draft budget at the macro and micro levels for discussion with Joe Branin this week. Once we have confirmation of the budget from the University and internal discussions have occurred, we expect to release the budget and deposit the funds in the individual accounts. This will be a very tight budget year because the increase on the materials budget for this year is only being given as cash instead of annual rate funds which continue each year.

Future budgets

Because of the long time line needed for appropriate review and consideration of serial cancellations, I will be working with the CAC and the SER Dept. to develop plans for serials cancellations should those be necessary for calendar year 2003. This plans will be modelled on those developed for the early 1990s which included a graduated % of cuts needed. Fortunately, in the early 1990s, the plan was initiated but it was not necessary to make the actual cuts. We will need to do the same sort of planning given the difficult budget situation.

Senior Fellows

I will be away from the Libraries from July 15 through August 3 at the UCLA Senior Fellows program. Technical Services questions should be directed to the individual department heads during my absence. Collection development questions will need to wait for my return. I will plan to monitor e-mail for crisis situations but will not be timely or reliable in responding in that fashion.
