Carol,
(Nancy -- just search keyword 856 to get to these)
Hello:
I am posting the following message for my colleague, Karen Selden
Thank you,
Rob Richards
Our library is experimenting with the new 856 field Web OPAC display
capabilities that Release M allows. These include customizing the
introductory text, choosing which subfields to display, choosing the order
in which these subfields display. We are eager to compare notes with other
libraries that have also implemented some or all of these new display
capabilities. Please share the URL to your Web OPAC, the choices you've
made, any tips you've learned and/or any problems you've encountered.
I'll be happy to summarize for the list.
For example, we have customized our introductory text and decided to
display subfields u, 3 and z in that order. We noticed that the first
subfield 3 and z message in each 856 field displays appended to the
hotlinked URL, creating an odd (and inaccurate) URL display. However, we
discovered a subsequent subfield z or a subsequent subfield 3 will display
in a non-hotlinked box underneath the hotlinked URL box. This lead us to
the work around of adding a blank subfield z or a blank subfield 3 to
create more user friendly displays. Unfortunately, this work around does
not work when a bibliographic record contains more than one 856 field. The
non-blank subfield z and/or 3 messages are either appended to URLs or
display below the last hotlinked box, which often contains a different URL
than the one the message is intended for. Has anyone else noticed this
behavior, or discovered a solution?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

* 856 FIELDS: Libraries may select which subfields of their 856 fields
display. WebPAC can also display multiple links from a single 856 with
multiple subfield |u entries. New wwwoption: DISPLAY_856=, e.g
DISPLAY_856=uzlm. This wwwoption will default to a value of z.
If the library can select which subfields display, then presumably we can
select all of them, as seems to be desired.
The Rev M documentation says "libraries can select the sub-fields they
want to
display and Web OPAC can display multiple links from one 856 field."
In last position in 856, |3 does display to the public in VT100 OPAC and in
the MARC display of the WebPAC but is not part of the hot link which is
only |z. There seems to be interest in having it be part of the link. |3
describes a part of the whole item being described such as a table of
contents. Sometimes the link is only to a part, not the whole. However,
when this was discussed at the 10/8/98 TSC meeting, we said we would delay
submitting an enhancement request until it was clear what we wanted.

Fast work from III -- this has already been done!
Magda -- I think you had a couple of examples -- could you recheck and make
sure the display now looks as you expected? Please check both on Oscar and
Felix. Thanks.
Sally
III Help Desk,
We have 2 PACs-- the change needs to be made on both machines.
Sally -- my TSC notes indicate that you were going to review the release 12
for display of subfield 3 in the 856 display. I believe this was something
that wasn't possible in the past but we were hoping it might be. Do you
have a current status? Thanks, cpd |
